EZ Go golf carts are designed for safety and comfort. Newer models are powered by quiet electric motors, and they have a sensor/controller that regulates speed. Many older models have gas powered engines with a throttle and carburetor linkage. Aside from using the accelerator pedal to go slower or faster, there is a variety of options to adjust the speed of these great golf buggies.
One way to increase the speed of EZ Go golf carts is to incorporate an octane booster when you fill the tank. The cart will have more pick-up, and it could gain as much as 5 mph.
A different approach is to take out the throttle linkage governor on the carburetor. This will allow the accelerator pedal to be further depressed. However, this adjustment is limited, since EZ Go golf carts have an electronic cutoff that shuts down the engine when they get to a certain rpm. Taking into account the short turning radius, bypassing the cutoff on a gas powered cart could, in some instances, compromise personal safety.
With regards to electric EZ Go golf carts, retrofitting a bigger electric motor would add more speed, but you would do this at the risk of voiding the manufacturer’s warranty. It’s better to save the time and cost of such a modification by having the speed controller changed.
